entrance auditions

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, Entrance Auditions for the 2020-21 season will take place this spring with the use of video recordings that will need to be sent to us using YouTube during the following dates: May 29-31, 2020

More details and instructions regarding this process will be posted here in coming weeks.

AUDITION MUSIC: Choose the appropriate orchestra linked below and continue to the student's instrument to view and download the required audition repertoire.

Spokane Youth Symphony Orchestra

Spokane Youth Philharmonic

Spokane Youth Sinfonietta

Spokane Youth Strings

Every student who participates in the Spokane Youth Symphony program must perform an entrance audition for the conductor of the orchestra for which he or she wishes to participate. Typically, entrance auditions take place in early June and September for the coming September-May rehearsal/concert season. Only students new to the program or returning students who wish to move up to more advanced orchestras need to audition. Returning students who wish to remain in the same orchestra do not need to take an entrance audition. A schedule for audition time sign-up will be posted on this website one to two months prior to the entrance auditions.

Students need to prepare the repertoire listed for their instrument on the page of audition requirements for that orchestra. They need to come to the audition location (which will be posted prior to auditions) no later than 15 minutes prior to their scheduled time in order to check in. The student or parent will fill out a brief form that will be to the conductor. The student will then perform the required music for the conductor/assistant.

Audition Instructions

1. Solo piece: Prepare a polished, recital-ready solo piece. The piece will be performed without accompaniment. You may play any work of your choice, but the level of difficulty should be an accurate representation of your technical and artistic ability. Your solo piece need not be memorized, but the entire piece should be performance-ready. You may be asked to stop playing before you reach the end of your prepared piece, or asked to play only a particular section. If this happens, please understand that it is only in the interest of time, not a reflection of your playing.

2. Required Scales & etude  (links to downloadable PDFs below):

3. Sight-reading from repertoire that may be performed by the orchestra for which you are auditioning.

Auditions last 10-15 minutes.
