Tuition Assistance Policy

The Spokane Youth Symphony (SYS) strives to provide financial assistance to children in need so they may profit from the orchestral music experience. SYS believes that no deserving young musician should be denied participation in the Spokane Youth Symphony orchestras because of inability to meet tuition requirements. Application forms for tuition assistance must be completed and submitted in the time period established by the Board of Directors.

A Tuition Assistance application is required for any family requesting financial help. Applications will be due NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 1, 2008. The Tuition Assistance Committee of the Spokane Youth Symphony Board of Directors will determine the amount of tuition assistance for your child for the 2008-2009 Season by October 20, 2008.

Any student joining the orchestra after the season has begun will be permitted to apply for tuition assistance within the first thirty (30) days of their participation. The Tuition Assistance Committee will promptly consider the request and notify them in writing regarding the amount of assistance being granted to them.

The SYS is committed to making assistance available to all who need it. Therefore, tuition assistance will be limited to 50% of tuition unless the Tuition Assistance Committee determines a specific financial hardship exists which warrants a greater award.

All information provided by applicants will be maintained in a confidential manner. Misrepresentation of financial information or circumstances may result in an immediate withdrawal of any tuition assistance award.

Determination Criteria
The committee meets as necessary to review and award tuition assistance based upon:

• A completed Tuition Assistance Application form.

• Financial Need –Documentation of eligibility for the National School Lunch Program, either free or reduced price level. Applicants not attending schools that participate in the NSLP need to provide other suitable documentation such as a tax return, a statement of need from a pastor or community resource worker, or other proof of total household income.

• Willingness to fulfill the requirements of SYS

• Willingness of parents/guardians to contribute volunteer time*

Tuition assistance is not automatically renewed. Reapplication requires all of the above items.

Any question, concern or complaint regarding implementation of this policy must be submitted in writing to the Tuition Assistance committee, and will be handled in a prompt and confidential manner. Ultimate resolution rests with the Spokane Youth Symphony Board of Directors.
